The Municipal Court has jurisdiction over traffic citations, misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors occurring within the city limits of Poulsbo. The court responds to requests for search and arrest warrants, as well as protection orders and no contact orders. The court maintains an accurate record of court proceedings and accounts for, collects, and receipts all fines and assessments associated with the court. The court is responsible for scheduling hearings and conducting trials in accordance with statutes and court rules. The court has established a probation department that monitors defendants to ensure compliance with the terms of sentences and pretrial conditions. All court staff members are cross-trained to process all functions of the court. When court staff members are on leave, other court staff members have the ability to process all functions of the court without interruption of service to the public.
The goal of the court is to provide a forum where traffic citations, misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor charges can be resolved peacefully, and citizens can seek protection. The court strives to be open and accessible to all, and to provide prompt and efficient relief to all litigants. The judge and staff work hard to ensure due process and individual attention to the parties in every case, and to make decisions that are consistent with established rules and laws. The court maintains independence as the third branch of government while working in cooperation with the legislative and executive branches to provide the best possible government for the citizens of Poulsbo. The City of Poulsbo Organizational Chart reflects the court is a separate branch of government in accordance to Court Rule GR29.
