911--When should you call?

911 is designed to quickly connect you with police, fire and medical professionals in the event of an, emergency. But what is a POLICE emergency? The following are examples of police emergencies where 911 is the appropriate method of contacting the Poulsbo Police Department.

Call 911 if you are aware of:

1. Obvious life threatening emergencies:

  • Dangerous felonies: murder; rape; assault with a deadly weapon; kidnap; robbery; arson or bombing
  • Dangerous crimes: domestic violence; DUI; assault; threats to injure or kill; road rage; discharge of gun; illegal drug use; reckless driving
  • Dangerous actions or conditions: lost child or an at risk adult; reckless display of firearm or weapon; violation of restraining, protection or no-contact court orders; objects being thrown from overpasses at cars

2. Crimes that are occurring or have just occurred:

  • Thefts: auto theft; breaking into a car or boat; shoplifting; in progress mail theft; theft of property
  • Burglaries: suspicious people at your neighbor's house, people looking into windows or jumping fences; strangers wandering into open garages
  • Vandalism: graffiti or tagging; destruction of traffic signs, mailboxes & bus stops; slashing tires; scratching or keying cars; kids egging cars and houses
  • Suspicious people: trespassers entering construction areas, people on roof tops at night, peeping toms looking into windows: possible drug use in parked cars and park property; people looking into mailboxes; people looking into parked cars
  • Violation of court orders: violation of protection orders, no-contact and restraining orders
  • Neighborhood nuisances: loud parties; noise disturbances; suspicious odors

A good general rule of thumb: If you need a police response, call 911. You are the eyes and ears of the police department. An involved and alert public enables the police to do their job. If you see something, say something.
