City Council – Community Book Reading
City of Poulsbo and Partners to Host Community Book Reading and Discussion
The City of Poulsbo and partners are sponsoring a Community Book Reading, culminating in a discussion and celebration event set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 9th at City Hall. The book selected for the community reading is “I Never Thought Of It That Way” by Monica Guzman. The New York Times states: “The book’s greatest offering, I think, is permissions to reclaim people we might have dumped for ideological reasons; such connections won’t sully us but may in fact enrich us.”
Partisanship is up, trust is down, and our social media feeds make us sure we’re right and everyone else is ignorant (or worse). But avoiding and attacking one another is breaking…everything. “I Never Thought Of It That Way” is a timely, personal guide, Monica Guzman, the chief storyteller for the national cross-partisan depolarization organization Braver Angels, takes you to the real front lines of a crisis that threatens to grind America to a halt-broken conversations among confounded people. She shows you how to overcome the fear and assumptions that surround us to finally do what only seams impossible: understand and even learn from people in your life whose whole worldview is not just different from yours, but opposed.
Community members are encouraged to buy and begin reading the book now, in preparation for the discussion and celebration event on November 9th. In addition to the printed version, an audio version is available wherever books are sold. The City is providing a limited number of free books for those who cannot afford one in their budget. The free books are available on the third floor of City Hall and at the Community Connection Event on Saturday, October 5th from 5pm to 7pm at the Kitsap Regional Library in Poulsbo.
The November 9th discussion and celebration event is free and open to the public. *Facilitator’s Name* of *Facilitator’s Business Name* will serve as the discussion leader and facilitator.
City leaders and community members have been busy planning the event, including Mayor Becky Erickson, Council Member Pam Crowe, Council Member Britt Livdahl, Poulsbo Resident Zach Ellis, Poulsbo Police Chief Ron Harding, Operations Director of the YMCA Hope Smith, and NAACP Bremerton Unit 1134 Member Shannon Turner.
